Portugal remains one of the most approachable destinations for people relocating from outside the EU, but the paperwork rewards preparation. Here is the honest, no-agency version of what the first few months actually involve.

The NIF comes first

Before you can open a Portuguese bank account, sign a lease, or apply for almost any visa, you need a NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) — Portugal's tax number. Non-EU applicants generally need a fiscal representative to obtain one from abroad; EU/EEA citizens can often get one directly at a local tax office (Finanças) or online. Get the NIF sorted before you book viewings or submit a visa application — almost every later step depends on it.

Three visa routes, in brief

Portugal's non-EU immigration system has narrowed in recent years, but three routes still cover most people moving here:

• D7 (passive income visa). For people with stable passive income — pensions, rental income, dividends, or savings — above a minimum threshold tied to the Portuguese minimum wage. It is the most common route for retirees and remote savers, and leads to renewable residency.
• D8 (digital nomad visa). For remote employees and freelancers with foreign clients or an employer, above a set monthly income threshold. It is the practical route for people still earning an active salary from abroad rather than living off savings or pensions.
• Golden visa. Portugal's investor residency route still exists, but it has changed substantially — real-estate investment no longer qualifies as it once did, and the eligible investment categories are narrower and higher-value than a few years ago. Treat any "buy a flat, get a visa" pitch you see online as out of date; verify the current qualifying categories directly with a licensed lawyer before assuming this route applies to you.

What it costs, roughly

For a couple, a realistic monthly budget outside Lisbon and Porto lands somewhere in the €1,800–€3,000 range depending on the town and lifestyle, rising toward the top of that range (and above it) in Lisbon or the Algarve coast. Healthcare: the SNS

Portugal's public healthcare system, the SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde), becomes accessible to legal residents once you're registered with a local health centre (centro de saúde) after establishing residency — but waiting times for a GP appointment and especially specialists can be long in some regions. Most new arrivals carry private health insurance for at least the first year, both because some visa routes require proof of coverage and because it shortens the wait for non-urgent care.
